As
described, Spacequad Internet Services utilizes local blocks in addition to the MAPS and
Spamhaus databases. These blocks are often temporary, and placed
up as a defensive measure against active SMTP Denial of Service
attacks (mailbombs), or to prevent active, large scale spam in
progress attacks.
A
short note to our subscribers: If and when e-mail blocks are
implemented, if someone sends an e-mail message and the sender's
IP address or SMTP (outgoing mail) server is on one of these block
lists, then the incoming e-mail is blocked (either permanently or
temporarily). This solution may result in the inadvertent blocking
of some e-mail that is not traditional spam.
This
is an unfortunate, but necessary action that must be taken to
protect the majority of our subscribers from this security issue.
Only upon working with the affected ISP will this issue be
resolved. We would therefore like to stress that you should
contact the affected ISP for assistance in resolving the
situation.
All
Non-MAPS or non-Spamhaus related SMTP error messages, sent back to
the original sender by Spacequad Internet Services, will be in the following
format:
ERROR:5.7.1:550
Mail Refused: Domain/IP: See http://www.spacequad.com/mail_blocks.htm#REASON
ERROR:4.7.1:450 Mail Temporarily Refused: Domain/IP: See http://www.spacequad.com/mail_blocks.htm#REASON
A
500 or 571 Error indicates a permanent refusal of the INBOUND mail
message. This indicates that Spacequad Internet Services will no longer accept
mail from that source, due to the continued abuse that is coming
from that domain or IP range.
A
400 or 450 error indicates a temporary failure of INBOUND mail.
This indicates that Spacequad Internet Services has had to temporarily refuse mail
from that source due to one or more reasons. Mail will be queued
up on the senders server, and eventually will be delivered,
providing the problem subsides.
Please
note: "Permanent" in the case of a mail error does not
mean that Spacequad Internet Services has blocked mail from the source
"forever". "Permanent" in this case indicates
a "go away" response to the mail message, as opposed to
a 4XX error, which means "try again later".
A
note to affected ISP's and providers: Spacequad Internet Services will no longer
accept mail from your domain or IP blocks due to the issues
described below.
Subscription
Abuse - ERROR:5.7.1:550 Mail Refused - THIS_IS_NOT_THE_REAL_DOMAIN
- See http://www.spacequad.com/mail_blocks.htm#subcription
Subscription
abuse is more commonly known as 'Mailing List Forgery'. This often
occurs with so-called "single opt-in",
"opt-in", or "out-out" mailing lists.
The
problem with these types of mailing lists is that a malicious user
anywhere on the Internet can subscribe a Spacequad Internet Services
user to
hundreds, sometimes thousands, of e-mail lists. With some mailing
list owners current configurations, it is possible that no attempt
will be made to confirm that the "victim" actually
subscribed to the mailing lists before they are added. As a result
the "victim" has to unsubscribe from mailing list(s)
that they never signed up for, which may be a extremely timely
process if they were subscribed to multiple lists. This also often
results in an increased (and sometimes damaging) impact on Spacequad Internet Services
mail servers.
Another
way that this problem can occur is through poor mailing list
management. Mailing list "brokers" often sell or rent
lists of harvested or "single opt-in" names to third
parties, who then send out mailings, under the guise that the
mailing lists were gathered legitimately. This often leads to
complaints from our subscribers. For more information on basic
mailing list management guidelines for preventing abuse, please
see http://mail-abuse.org/manage.html.
No
Spacequad Internet Services role account address, nor any Spacequad Internet Services
subscriber,
should be forced to "unsubscribe" from a mailing list
that was never subscribed to in the first place. Permission of new
subscribers must be fully verified before mailings commence. This
is usually accomplished by means of an email message sent to the
subscriber to which s/he must reply, or containing a URL which
s/he must visit, in order to complete the subscription. If an
organization does not utilize these confirmation methods to ensure
that malicious, forged, or otherwise fraudulent subscriptions do
not occur, then Spacequad Internet Services will not accept mail from that source.
Spacequad Internet Services
will take the appropriate steps to ensure that neither Spacequad Internet Services
role accounts, nor the subscribers of the Spacequad Internet Services
service, receive unsolicited commercial e-mails from a domain or
source that does not utilize confirmation methods in its mailing
list methodology.
Until
such a time as this issue is corrected, Spacequad Internet Services
may not accept
mail from a sites that do not utilize confirmed mailing list
methodologies.
If
you would like to resolve this situation, you must e-mail Spacequad Internet Services
Security at security at spacequad dot com.
IF YOU E-MAIL TO ANY ADDRESS OTHER THAN security at spacequad dot com,
WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT YOUR REQUEST WILL BE ADDRESSED IN A
TIMELY MANNER.
Domains listed with this error will be removed only after
meeting one of the following conditions:
Option 1: Your organization is able to produce full
subscription and confirmation records for this subscriber (such as
web logs or e-mail transaction reports detailing that our
subscriber both signed up for, and subsequently confirmed, the
subscriptions for your mailings).
OR
Option 2: Your organization adheres to the following criteria
for mailings to Spacequad Internet Services
A. Adherence to Spacequad Internet Service's Inbound
Sending Policies
B. Removal and permanent blocking of all outbound mail for all
clients to *@Spacequad.com (example: user@Spacequad.com)
C. Permanent blocking of all Spacequad Internet Services RFC 2142 addresses (see http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2142.txt)
D. Immediate reconfirmation of all non-confirmed *@*.Spacequad.com email
addresses (example: user@foo.spacequad.com) in your mailing lists. We can
assist you with verbiage if so desired.
E. Assurances that your organization will take immediate steps to
stop the sending of nonconfirmed mailings to our role accounts and
to our subscribers, through the use of CONFIRMED opt-in mailing
list practices, for all future mailings. If you would like more
information on the many methods of confirmation techniques for
mailings, please see http://www.mail-abuse.org/nml/methods.html.
OR
Option 3: Your organization joins or subscribes to a service
listing senders who have certified, via some pre-defined
mechanism, that all mail that they send are confirmed as having
been requested by the recipient. A list of those services which Spacequad Internet Services
currently subscribes to can be found at our Whitelist
Policy page.
We are not, however, interested in any of the following, as
they are not indicative of permission-based mailings:
1. Confirmation that you have "listwashed" our
subscriber.
2. Information on your "simple unsubscribe process".
3. Our subscriber's name, address, or other personal information.
4. Information on your "privacy policy".
5. Information on where/how you obtained the address in question,
unless accompanied by subscription and confirmation logs.
6. Autoresponses.

Spam
Source - ERROR:5.7.1:550 Mail Refused -
THIS_IS_NOT_THE_REAL_DOMAIN - See http://www.spacequad.com/mail_blocks.htm#spam_source
When a block is placed on a domain or IP range and the reason
is "spam source", that is because the domain listed in
the error has been directly connected in the sending of UBE or UCE
directly to Spacequad Internet Services subscribers or role accounts, and has been
unresponsive to complaints.
The domain listed in the error message is considered by Spacequad Internet Services
to be a known source of spam. If you are not part of the
domain listed in the error message, then you, in all likelihood,
just happen to have network connectivity on the same network
segment as the spammer.
This will, therefore, sometimes inadvertently block innocent
mail. This is unfortunate, but as Spacequad Internet Services has no way of
verifying the integrity of the entire network, and cannot tell
where a blocked entity will "hop" to next within a
limited block, we have no choice but to make broader assumptions
to protect our networks and our customers.
In order to clear up the situation, your provider must either:
(1) Terminate the spammer (and let us know)
OR
(2) Tell us exactly what IP addresses belong to the spammer
We can then modify or remove the listing as appropriate. We have
NO WISH to innocently block mail. We do, however, need to hear
from your provider in order to get this accomplished. As such, you
should contact them FIRST.
Your provider must e-mail Spacequad Internet Services
Security at removel at spacequad
dot com.

WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT YOUR REQUEST WILL BE ADDRESSED IN A

Spam
Support Services
Should a domain be listed with this error, it indicates that
the domain, to the best of our knowledge, is *knowingly* providing
services to a domain or entity associated with spam that our
subscribers have received.
This includes:
(1) providing connectivity to spam networks
(2) hosting web pages which are promoted by spam
(3) providing e-mail drop boxes or autoresponders which are
promoted by spam
(4) providing resources such as DNS services, banner ads, hit
counters, script processing and form handling services to
sites promoted by spam
SMTP mail blocked in this manner will be blocked with an error
message similar to the following:
ERROR:5.7.1:550 Mail Refused: DOMAIN1 providing spam
